1996—ANOTHER HEMINGWAY SUICIDE

On the thirty-fifth anniversary of the death of Ernest Hemingway, the master novelist’s granddaughter, model and actress Margaux Hemingway, was found dead inside her Santa Monica apartment. Once called the “Face of a Generation,” the six-foot star of Lipstick (1976) and other films and the face of the Faberge fragrance Babe had been dead for days and her body decomposed. Margaux had been through a divorce from filmmaker Bernard Foucher, sifted through fewer and fewer magazine cover offers and mediocre movie roles, posed for Playboy and been in and out of the Betty Ford dry-out tank. The eldest daughter of Ernie’s son, Jack Hemingway, one-time Idaho Fish and Game commissioner, she became the fifth member of her family to take his or her own life. The cause of death was an overdose of sedatives. She was forty-one. Her ashes are buried in the shadow of her grandfather’s monument in Ketchum, Idaho.
